Functional Nutrition is nutrition-based care that is focused on building health by restoring proper physiological functioning of the body.
Just as Functional Medicine approaches the body from the perspective of treating the root cause of disease, Functional Nutrition looks at the foundational way that food affects your body on the cellular level. Food is much more than calories, in fact there are millions of molecules of information in every bite of food that you eat! These molecules come into your body, effect how your cells behave and how you feel.
Dr. Lesley James welcomes Nutritionist, Heather Carrera, MS to our practice.
Heather Carrera graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and a minor in Psychology in 2011. She enrolled in the Masters Program in Human Nutrition program at the University of Bridgeport in 2012, where she studied clinical nutrition, with an emphasis on an integrative and functional approach to assessing and counseling clients. She understands the value of nutrition in promoting wellness and managing illness, and focuses on the treatment of underlying causes of disease, not symptoms. Heather uses an evidence-based, scientific approach to provide customized diet and nutrient recommendations that will address the bio-individuality of each person. Functional assessment through the use of laboratory tests is a big part of understanding the unique biochemical makeup of individuals, and will be a critical aspect of creating your personalized treatment plan. She is fluent in Spanish, and currently lives with her husband in Webster.
Heather´s mission is to utilize nutrition to prevent and heal disease, and promote a healthy, active lifestyle.
